About the Artist
I'm Rodrigo Méndez, a Mexican painter and architect based between Oaxaca and Amsterdam. My artistic journey began with a fascination for drawing and watercolor, which has gradually been expanding into painting and the exploration of other techniques.
All the freedom I've gained through years of this drawing gymnastics, painting —freedom and technique, form and color— suddenly concentrates into a bare form that leads me toward a painting in content and form.
Painting outdoors and drawing on the road have become essential in my creative process, allowing me to capture not only the appearance of a place but also its spirit and emotional resonance.
I paint with the conviction that art should not obey rules, it has no borders nor limits, but should reveal what beats within.
Everything I paint and everything else is the product of a need for expression that I have, my restlessness to say something that is expressive, that is profound, that is strong and that is valuable.
In the end, I paint what I carry inside me. It is my inner need. It is entirely my own.
